I recently guest-posted over at Melani’s blog Reflections of the Heart! The idea for this post has been brewing in my heart for a long time and it’s such an honor to see it on Melani’s amazing blog. Here’s a little excerpt; it would mean the world to me if you would check out the full post right here!
More than seventy-five percent of the people I see walking around town don’t dress themselves with dignity and respect. That means only twenty-five percent of them might know these twenty-seven benefits of dressing modesty I’m about to show you.
A lot of people think the only benefit of dressing modestly is that we’re glorifying God and pleasing Him. And while that’s an honor and a joy all in itself, there are so many other amazing benefits that come when you dress yourself like the priceless child of God you are.
When discussing these benefits with other like-minded Christian teenage girls, I was amazed to end up with a powerful list that makes dressing modestly the most simple and obvious choice in the world. Let’s dive right in!
Benefits of Dressing Modestly
1. You’re Obeying God
Obeying God? Great! … but how does that benefit us?
Deuteronomy 28:2 kicks off a powerful chapter with this: “You will experience all these blessings if you obey the Lord your God:” Then it launches into the next fourteen verses of incredible blessings for the children of God. Those blessings are made available to us today through Jesus.
The benefits of obeying the Lord are endless and too much to go into for now, but rest assured, obeying God is never something done in vain. God is a faithful rewarder of those who diligently seek Him and obey His Word!
2. You’re Honoring God
1 Samuel 2:30 states, “I will honor those who honor Me.” That is God’s promise to you! Instead of honoring society’s mold and their lies, you’re putting God and His commands first. You can bet your bottom dollar God sees that and will turn around and do the same for you.
3. You’re Representing the Kingdom of Heaven Well
2 Corinthians 5:20 says, “… We are Christ’s ambassadors.”
No matter what we do, as children of the Most High, we’re representing Him. We’re the only Bible most people will ever read.
We can check our hearts to find out whether we’re representing the Kingdom of Heaven well or poorly with our outfit choices. Dressing both nicely and modestly is an excellent way to represent the God we serve and Who provides our needs.
4. You’re Treating Yourself With Respect
How much do you truly value yourself? Do you clothe yourself like the priceless blood-bought child of God you are, or do you need the world’s / friends’ / a boy’s approval to determine your worth? It shows through your clothing choices.
5. You’re Setting a Godly Example
The last thing I would want to do is take advice from another believer who didn’t dress themselves with dignity and respect. Dressing modestly shows we know Whose we are and that we can help fellow believers along in this area.
6. You Don’t Look Like a Hobo
I don’t care how fashionable it seems or what the price tag is. Dressing without dignity just looks shabby, like you can’t afford a piece of clothing with enough fabric to properly cover yourself. I’ve never seen a modestly-dressed person who looked like a hobo in need of dignified clothing.
7. Modesty is Comfy
I just love wearing a T-shirt as opposed to a squeezing spaghetti-strap shirt. Pulling on a modest pair of jeans feels way more comfy than sporting Daisy Dukes would. And who wants to walk around all day wearing a short dress so tight it’s constricting your lungs?
8. Modesty is Freeing
Don’t you feel your greatest in outfits you can move around freely in without fear of flashing anyone?
I do a lot of photography for my blogs, so being able to bend or crouch down for different angles without being indecent is one less thing to worry about. Even when I took dance and gymnastics, wearing modest dance clothing allowed more freedom and moment than anything immodest stores had to offer.
9. Modesty is Sophisticated
It feels great to be able to look like a sophisticated, educated person just by respectful clothing choices instead of someone struggling to survive in the wild or someone with no self-respect.
10. Other People Respect You
Not only are you respecting yourself when you dress with dignity, but others respect you, too. 67% of guys ages 18-22 when polled said they felt uncomfortable when speaking to a woman dressed immodestly, and all of them from another survey said they had more respect for girls who respected themselves with their clothing choices.
11. You Glow in the Dark
In a world where only 31% of the population considers themselves Christians, what fun is it to fit in when we were born to stand out?
Dressing modestly takes a stand. It sets you apart as a beloved child of God. It draws a clear line between the way ambassadors of the Kingdom of Heaven do things and the way the world does things. We’re called to be lights in the darkness! (1 Peter 2:9)
Whew! Each one was so powerful, it was hard to stop at just 11. Please continue reading over at Reflections of the Heart; it would mean so much to me! ♥
